About
It started with a kitchen scale and a notebook
Annam means food, and food is where our own attempt at living more lightly began — badly, and with a lot of guessing.
In early 2024 I started weighing our household waste. Not for a website — there was no website — but because we had just moved into a small flat with one bin cupboard, and every Tuesday it overflowed. I wanted to know what was actually in there.
Two things became clear within a month. The first: almost everything I believed about our waste was wrong. I assumed plastic packaging was the problem; by weight, it was food we bought with good intentions and never cooked. The second: nearly all the advice I could find online was written by people selling something. Beautiful photos, bamboo everything, and a checkout button.
Annam Naturals exists to be the other thing — the notebook version. We test a method for at least four weeks in an ordinary home before writing about it. We publish the failures alongside the wins, because the failures are what save you money. And we say plainly, more often than a shopping site ever would, that the greenest option is usually the one you already own.
What you can expect here
- Numbers, not vibes. Where energy or money is involved, we measure and show the readings.
- No brand placement. Nobody can pay to appear in a guide. Affiliate links are marked and never decide the ranking.
- Advice that survives a bad week. If a habit collapses the moment life gets busy, it isn't a habit, and we'll say so.
- Slow publishing. Roughly one substantial article a week, plus guide updates when something changes.
Who this is for
People who rent. People with small kitchens and no compost heap. People who tried the jar-of-trash version of zero waste, felt like a failure, and quietly gave up. This is a publication for the middle ground, where most of the actual environmental impact of ordinary households sits.
How we pay for it
Display advertising and a small number of affiliate links, both disclosed. There is no paywall and no sponsored content. If that ever changes, it will be announced at the top of this page before anything is published under it.
