What grew well with limited sun
Herbs like mint and chives tolerated the lower light far better than expected. Leafy greens did reasonably well in a partially shaded spot, harvested a little at a time rather than waiting for a full head to form. A few pollinator-friendly flowers filled gaps and needed almost no attention.
What didn't work
- Tomatoes and most fruiting vegetables, which needed more direct sun than the balcony ever got
- Root vegetables in shallow rental-friendly containers, which came out stunted
