Batch Cooking Without the Freezer Turning Into a Landfill

Batch cooking is supposed to reduce waste. Ours was quietly creating a freezer full of forgotten containers until we fixed the system.

Batch cooking is meant to cut food waste, but our freezer had become its own kind of waste problem — containers of unlabelled soup from months ago, quietly forgotten.

The fix that worked

We started labelling everything with the date and a rough use-by (three months for most cooked meals), and — the part that actually changed behaviour — kept a written list stuck to the freezer door of exactly what was inside. Crossing items off the list as we used them made the freezer's contents visible again instead of a mystery.

Our batch-cooking rules now

  • Never freeze more than two weeks' worth of any single dish
  • Rotate old stock to the front when adding new batches
  • Check the list before writing a shopping list, not after

The freezer itself didn't need to change. The system for tracking what was in it did — and that was the entire fix.

For more of this kind of testing, the sustainable kitchen & food hub collects everything we've tried in that area.

Frequently asked

Do I need to buy anything to get started?

No. Every method here begins with what is already in your cupboards. We only recommend a purchase when something has genuinely worn out, and we say what it should cost.

How do you test the things you write about?

Minimum four weeks of ordinary household use, with notes. For anything involving energy or money we use a plug-in meter and record the readings before and after.

Are your recommendations paid for?

Never. Brands cannot buy placement. Some outbound links are affiliate links, which we mark, and they do not change what makes the list.

What if a method doesn't work in my home?

Write to us. A surprising amount of our best material comes from readers explaining why something failed in a flat, a shared house or a very cold winter.
