Insulation upgrades and new appliances aren't within everyone's budget. We focused on lower-cost changes for a winter and measured the difference on the bill.

What made a measurable difference

Draught excluders on doors and letterboxes were the cheapest fix with a clearly noticeable effect on how quickly rooms cooled. Lowering the thermostat by even one or two degrees, paired with warmer clothing indoors, showed up clearly on the bill without any real discomfort. Reflective radiator panels behind radiators on external walls made a smaller but real difference.

Habits that helped as much as any product

  • Closing curtains as soon as it got dark, not after
  • Heating only the rooms in use, with doors closed to unheated rooms
  • Running the heating on a timer rather than continuously at a lower temperature

None of this required a renovation budget — most of it cost under a modest amount total and paid back within the first month of the heating season.

Frequently asked

Do I need to buy anything to get started?

No. Every method here begins with what is already in your cupboards. We only recommend a purchase when something has genuinely worn out, and we say what it should cost.

How do you test the things you write about?

Minimum four weeks of ordinary household use, with notes. For anything involving energy or money we use a plug-in meter and record the readings before and after.

Are your recommendations paid for?

Never. Brands cannot buy placement. Some outbound links are affiliate links, which we mark, and they do not change what makes the list.

What if a method doesn't work in my home?

Write to us. A surprising amount of our best material comes from readers explaining why something failed in a flat, a shared house or a very cold winter.
