The sorting categories that worked
Textile recycling bins (found via most council websites) took worn-out clothing not fit for donation. Charity shops took anything still wearable, though we learned to call ahead — some are overwhelmed with certain categories like fast fashion basics. A local buy-nothing group took furniture and homeware within days, faster than we expected.

What was genuinely hard to place
- Single shoes and damaged shoes — most textile bins won't take them
- Old electricals, which need a separate WEEE recycling point, not general textile or charity donation
- Foam pillows and mattress toppers, which very few programmes accept
