The weekend checklist
Checking and replacing worn door and window seals took the most time but had the clearest payoff. Bleeding radiators removed trapped air that had been quietly reducing heating efficiency all year without us noticing. Vacuuming behind and under major appliances, particularly the fridge, improved their running efficiency slightly but noticeably on the electricity meter.
Worth doing but often skipped
- Checking the boiler's actual operating pressure against the manual, not just assuming it's fine
- Clearing any blocked airbricks or vents, which affects both efficiency and damp
