What held up
A double-walled stainless steel bottle was the clear winner for keeping drinks cold and surviving drops without denting badly. A wide-mouth version was noticeably easier to clean and to add ice to. Glass bottles with a silicone sleeve were fine at a desk but too risky for a bag with other hard items.
What we wouldn't buy again
- A plastic bottle with a built-in straw, where the straw mechanism cracked within four months
- A collapsible silicone bottle that developed a persistent smell no amount of cleaning removed
