Carbon footprint calculators give confusing, inconsistent numbers. We compared several and worked out what's actually worth tracking.

Online carbon footprint calculators often give wildly different numbers for the same household. We ran our details through several and looked at where they actually agreed.

Where the calculators agreed
Home heating and hot water consistently came out as the largest single category for a typical household, regardless of which calculator we used. Car use, where applicable, was usually the second largest. Food came in as meaningful but smaller than either of those two in every calculator we tried.
What's actually worth tracking yourself
- Monthly energy bills in kWh, which give a real number rather than an estimate
- Rough weekly car mileage, if that applies to your household
- Big one-off purchases (large appliances, renovations), which calculators often miss entirely

Our conclusion: don't trust the exact final number from any single calculator, but do trust the pattern — heating and hot water are where changes matter most for most households.
